A2 Art Summer holiday sketchbooks

Today saw the new A2 Art & Design students return after the summer break.  Over the holidays they have been busily working on the very start of the 'Personal Investigation' project (Unit 3).  We started the session by looking through every ones sketchbooks to evaluate progress & to see how each student has started to explore their individual ideas.  They have two themes to choose from - 'Architecture' or 'Visual Stories' - each one a very open theme that in the past has resulted in a vast array of beautiful outcomes, ranging from paintings through to fashion based ideas.

These images above are from one of the A' Level Art students from 2013 - she chose the theme of 'Visual Stories' & researched into Fox Hunting.  Her research was extensive and included attending a local hunt/meet & interviewed lots of the hunts people to gather quotes.  She produced a wide range of paintings, paper & stitch based ideas & a final tweedy jacket that was heavily embellished with machine embroidery based illustrations & quotes.  This was a comprehensive body of personal work & earnt this student an A*.

Now then back to the current A2 student - some of the exquisite sketchbook pages that I saw today can be seen below.

The above images are a delightful celebration of colour - well done to Claire!  These initial ideas will translate into a vast array of bright, colourful paintings that will explore the journey of life - this is a fabulous personal slant on the theme - watch this space for more of Claire's work as it develops.

The image above is a lively answer to the theme of architecture, it's made particularly exciting due to the linear quality of the car & figures in the foreground - I think this is something I would strongly recommend developing further - to explore the contrast between simple line work & more detailed/decorative painted areas - this could be developed into stitch work, Photo shop based line & colour drop work etc... Keep watching this space for further developments.

The above sketchbook page shows Alice's true skill at I.T based collage work.  She has cleverly combined hand drawn & photographic based images to create lively illustrations - this is a working style that she wishes to develop further - watch this space....

Here Georgie has gone crazy on making little houses/beach huts, this image doesn't quite show how exquisite the sketchbook page truly is - the decorative & quirky quality is stunning.  Georgie plans to push these pattern based ideas further & may even develop them into fashion based ideas - so many ideas!!

These are only a few on the wonderful images that I was privileged to see today - I feel this could be a very exciting term ahead.  Well done to all students who showed their work today.
