Since September all Textiles students have spent hours & hours learning & honing new skills & techniques (AO1, AO2) - it is vital to equip students with the ability to start to produce their own design outcomes. Their sketchbooks are now literally bulging with samples, designer research, trials/test pieces, colour palettes & now designs/illustrations (AO1, AO2, AO3). The students have lovingly nurtured these sketchbooks into the dazzling, bejewelled wonders that they carry around college with pride (understandable pride - they are stunning).
All term the A2 Textile students have been working on the theme of 'architectural detail' which has afforded them an abundance of rich research material (AO3). They have manipulated fabric into origami inspired shapes, slashed layers of fabric, created ruffles & frills, made mini-peplums, foiled, transferred images to name but a few of the skills & techniques that they have explored and developed (AO1, AO2). They have looked at such a range of designers, from local contemporary designers through to the mind boggling, amazing Dolce & Gabbana (AO3).
Last week Stephanie McDonald Walker agreed to be interviewed by some of the students, which was so kind & generous of her, she really left them buzzing & inspired (AO3). She was such a great ambassador for where fashion & business studies rubs along very nicely together.

Meanwhile, the lovely AS Textiles students have been designing, designing, designing their final outcomes & they too have some amazing sketchbooks. Their recent fashion illustrations & design concepts have been so incredible - these students have only been studying textiles for 3 1/2 months and the maturity of their work has astounded me.
Additionally one student has produced some amazing linear drawings in her attempts to illustrate her applique designs. The intricate detailing is simply stunning, if she can translate this into stitch & applique it will be beautiful.
As a special educational treat I am taking all of the Textiles students to the Clothes Show tomorrow with the lovely Miss.S. We are so very excited - we have booked the students tickets for the big catwalk show and also into a fashion illustration seminar. Additional to this, they will be investigating all of the university stands, trying to get information for their futures, and I suspect they will have a few minutes to shop too. I will have my trusty camera with me, so I'm sure I'll find some visually exciting opportunities to report back with. Watch this space!!
